Only two days this season have free daytime admission at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and free evening admission to ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo: Monday, Nov. 30, and Monday, Dec. 7. Both need tickets booked ahead. Both fall weeks before school lets out. The free calendar for the whole park follows that pattern. Most of it lands in November and the first half of December, and by the week before Christmas it's gone.
ZooLights' Free Mondays End on Dec. 14
ZooLights runs from 4:30 to 9 p.m., Nov. 20 through Jan. 3, 2027, with closures on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Lincoln Park Zoo's 2026 announcement lists four free Mondays: Nov. 23, Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14. The zoo's ZooLights page leaves out Dec. 21 and Dec. 28, the two Mondays that fall during most families' holiday break.
Even on free nights, every guest needs a ticket. The zoo says that includes infants. Tickets for each free Monday go out one week ahead at 11 a.m. Central. That gives each one a fixed booking window:
| Free ZooLights Monday | Tickets release |
|---|---|
| Nov. 23 | Mon., Nov. 16, 11 a.m. |
| Nov. 30 | Mon., Nov. 23, 11 a.m. |
| Dec. 7 | Mon., Nov. 30, 11 a.m. |
| Dec. 14 | Mon., Dec. 7, 11 a.m. |
Two release times fall on the same days the Nature Museum is free. If you're at the museum on Nov. 30 or Dec. 7, the next week's ZooLights tickets go live while you're there.
Free admission covers the lights only. The zoo says regular hours and ticketed attractions still apply on free Mondays, and food and drinks are sold as usual. Ride tickets cost $4.50 each for most attractions, including the Endangered Species Carousel, the Lionel Train Adventure and the holiday VR experience. The Ferris Wheel and Gorilla Trek take two tickets, or $9 per guest. A family of four on the Ferris Wheel spends $36 on a free night, before any hot cocoa.
Nov. 30 and Dec. 7 Line Up With the Nature Museum
The Nature Museum's 2026 Illinois-resident free days include Nov. 2 through 4, Nov. 30 through Dec. 2, and Dec. 7 and 8. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closes Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving. It closes 30 minutes before ZooLights opens. Two of its free days fall on free ZooLights Mondays, so on those dates you can fill an afternoon and evening in the park without paying admission.
A regular adult ticket to the Nature Museum costs $15 for Illinois residents. Free days cover basic admission only. The Judy Istock Butterfly Haven is still a $5 add-on per person. Illinois residents can reserve free tickets online or in person, and the museum suggests a $10 donation per household. The museum also says its free-day dates may change and asks visitors to confirm on its ticketing site before they go.
The current exhibit is "From Seed to Sanctuary: Native Gardening in the Midwest," which runs through Jan. 24, 2027. It includes hands-on seed activities and native-plant art, and it comes with general admission.
Here's one way to spend Nov. 30 or Dec. 7 without paying admission:
- 10 a.m.: Arrive at the Nature Museum with your free reserved tickets. The museum notes limited free street parking on Cannon and Stockton Drive.
- 11 a.m.: Book free ZooLights tickets for the following Monday when they go live.
- Afternoon: Take time for "From Seed to Sanctuary," and add the Butterfly Haven for $5 a person if you want it.
- 4 p.m.: The museum closes. Dinner fits here. Lincoln Park's newest restaurants cluster on a few walkable corridors.
- 4:30 p.m. onward: ZooLights opens with your free tickets from the week before.
The Conservatory Is Closed Mondays, So Wednesday, Dec. 2 Works Best
The Lincoln Park Conservatory, at 2391 N. Stockton Dr., is free, but you need a timed-entry ticket. It's open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. That means you can't add it to either Monday plan. The Lincoln Park Conservancy suggests a donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child.
The Conservatory is open on one Nature Museum free day: Wednesday, Dec. 2, the last day of the Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 stretch. On that day you can see the museum's exhibits and the Conservatory's greenhouses for free on reserved tickets. There's no free ZooLights that night, though. Advance fixed-date ZooLights tickets cost $7 to $12 depending on the date.
The History Museum's Free Days Come First
At the south end of the park, the Chicago History Museum's last Illinois-resident free days of 2026 are Wednesday, Nov. 11, and Thursday, Nov. 19. Otherwise, adult admission is $19 for Chicago residents. Illinois residents 18 and under get in free all year.
Those November dates are a good fit for the museum's fall exhibits. "Threads of a Nation: Preserving Presidential Clothing" opens Oct. 24 and features garments associated with the Washingtons, Adamses and Lincolns. "US at 250: Dorian Sylvain" opened Oct. 6, and its mixed-media installation "We Weave Our Future" runs October through January. "Aquí en Chicago" closes Nov. 8, three days before the first free day, so you'll need a paid ticket to see it.
Nov. 19 is also Member Preview Night at ZooLights. Zoo members get first access, plus free train and carousel rides, 20% off at the Gift Shop, and free hot chocolate at the Member Center. Depending on membership level, members also get two to eight free fixed-date ZooLights tickets for the season. For a household that plans to go more than once, those tickets cover nights the free Mondays don't, including the holiday-break weeks.
After Dec. 14, It's Paid Tickets or Member Tickets
Once the free Mondays end, you'll need a paid ticket or one of the free fixed-date tickets that come with a zoo membership. The special events fill most of December and early January:
| Date | Event | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Thu., Nov. 19 | Member Preview Night | Members only |
| Tue., Nov. 24 | Sensory-Friendly Night | Static or slowed lights, lower music; $7 tickets |
| Sun., Dec. 6 | Chris White Trio Tribute to A Charlie Brown Christmas | Matinee and kid-friendly evening show at Café Brauer; new 18+ evening show this year |
| Thu., Dec. 10 | Adults Night Out: Sugar and Spice | Ages 21 and over; tickets from $20; starts 6:30 p.m. |
| Thu., Dec. 31 | New Year's Eve at ZooLights | Hourly countdowns |
| Sat., Jan. 2 | New Year's ReZoolutions | New this season; yoga, sound meditation, early ZooLights access |
The ticket you choose matters more as the season goes on. Fixed-date tickets cost $7 to $12 if bought ahead and $20 on the day of your visit. A flexible ticket costs $20, which the zoo pitches as protection against sellouts and bad weather. It's good for any regular ZooLights night through Jan. 3, but not for ticketed special events like the ones in the table above. If guests are visiting the week of Dec. 21 and their plans aren't set, a flexible ticket costs the same as walking up. A fixed-date ticket bought ahead costs less if you're sure of the night.
For an evening out without the kids in the first week of the season, Steppenwolf's world premiere of "Adirondack Chair Circle" runs Oct. 22 through Dec. 6. It closes the same day as the Charlie Brown tribute at Café Brauer.
